As its name implies, this is a species of pelagic Jelly that is capable of bioluminescence. This is assumed to take place through the typical mode for Cnidarian luminescence, a Luciferin-Luciferase reaction in which Luciferin (literally “Light-bringer”) is combined with Adrenosine Triphosphate (ATP) and oxidised by enzyme reaction which immediately produces photoemission. This is because the reaction is quite violent in terms of electrical charge - as a result, the additional electron energy is released as visible light. The reaction relies on the catalyst action of Calcium, Kalium (Potassium), and various other reactive metals to facilitate - all of which are ions found in seawater at measurably significant levels.
